Abstract
A social process can be detected through the social dynamics between teacher and students, thus this study aimed at revealing the certain aspects of verbal interaction in bilingual classroom with a focus on description and analysis of teacher-students talk in five subject matters (Biology, Physics, Mathematics, ICT, and English) which used English as the medium of instruction in SMP Negeri I Medan. Transcriptions of recorded classroom sessions were analyzed to identify the patterns of classroom interaction, and variations of its moves, in reference to the models suggested by Flanders (Ten categories of FIAC) and Sinclair and Coulthard (IRF). Of the ten sessions of recorded data, it was found that class interactions were largely dominated by the teachers, yet the power struggle could also be seen in the students’ verbal communication, particularly within the group presentations initiated by three teachers.
