Abstract

This study focuses specifically on investigating the politeness Strategy in Offering Food by male and female waiters in KFC SM.RAJA Medan. It employs qualitative research method and applies a case study design. The subjects were eighteen customers in KFC SM.RAJA in Medan. There are eight male customers and eight female customers. The instruments used for this study were observation, interview and document gathering. The observation was applied to get the data about the utterances they used in the KFC. The interview was applied to get the data for answering the three questions of this study; the types of politeness strategies, the realization of politeness strategies used by the waiters and the reasons why they used the strategies. While the documentation needed to give a visual data about the subjects and site of the study. The data were analyzed by using Miles, Huberman and Saldana Method, proposed by Brown and Levinson theory. It has been found that there were four types of politeness strategies, they are: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategies. The dominantly of used politeness strategies uttered by male waiters is positive strategies, and the dominantly of used politeness strategies uttered by female waiters is positive strategies. The reason of this matter because of some factors such as for bald on record are used because of keep efficiency, and to avoid misinterpretation, positive politeness are used to satisfy the hearer’s and build familiarity among the waiters and the customers, negative politeness are used to pay respect, satisfy the hearer’s negative face and to avoid the threat, off record are used because of avoid the responsibility and minimize the threat to the listener
