Abstract

This main objective of the study is to determine the effect of Problem Based Learning Model combined with Powerpoint software toward student learning outcomes compared with conventional learning. The population in this study was students of grade 10th SMA Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan which consisted of nine classes. Sample selected was carried out by random sampling techniques i.e. grade X-5 treated as experimental class and grade X-7 as control class. The experimental and control groups respectively consisted of 30 students. Instrument used to determine student learning outcomes was teacher made objective tests which consisted of 20 multiple choice questions. Experimental class was taught by using Problem based learning model using powerpoint and the control class was taught with traditional teaching strategy. It was found that, the average score of pretest for experimental class was 23.00 while for the control class was 25.83. The average post-test score for experimental class was 79.16 meanwhile the average post-test score for control class was 65.50. The learning outcome gain value of the experimental class was 72.93%, meanwhile for the control class was 53.26%. Based on the statistical analysis it was found that t calc. > t table i.e 13.26 > 1.6723 at a significance level of α = 0.05, so that Ha is accepted and it can be concluded that the student learning outcomes which was taught by problem based learning model using powerpoint is higher than conventional teaching strategy.
