Abstract

This study dealt with The Politeness Strategies of Five Years Old Children. It employs descriptive qualitative research method. This study was aimed to describe: (1) the types of politeness strategy used by five-years-old children in requesting something in their social environment, (2) the process of using politeness strategies by five-years-old children in requesting something in their social interaction, (3) the reason of using politeness strategies in requesting something by five-years-old children in their social interaction. The subjects of the study were 5 children of five years old of PAUD Khairin Kids Medan. The instruments used in this study are observation and note taking. All the utterances which are related to politeness strategies that producing by the children was to rewrite down in the note. All types of Politeness Strategies were used by five years old children namely: (1) Bald on record, (2) Positive Politeness, (3) Negative Politeness, and (4) Off Record and (5) Adult Suggestion. But there were two of the subjects only used three types of politeness strategies. The dominant type are used is bald on record strategy. In producing politeness strategies the five subjects of five years old used directive request and indirective request, where directive request was dominant used. Furthermore, the reasons why do the children of five years old used politeness strategies because their cognitive and psychosocial were developed.
