Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze the implementation of GIST strategy
on student’s ability in reading comprehension on recount text. It also find out
teacher’s difficulties in implementing the GIST strategy. The study was conducted
by using qualitative methodology. The subject of this study was the English teacher
of SMAS Angkasa 1 Medan. The techniques of collecting the data were observation
in the classroom and interview with the English teacher. The data of this study was
the teacher’s instructions in implementing GIST strategy. Based on theory by
Sethna (2011) proposed that there are some procedures that help the teacher to
present GIST strategy. The result of this study explained that the implementation
of GIST strategy in teaching reading comprehension was well done. The teacher
was implemented the GIST strategy based on the instructions of the experts. The
teacher wants to creat a discussion group for the students when the strategy
implemented. But other than that, there were no specific difficulties that the teacher
faced during the implementation of the strategy.
