Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the Speech Function that is used in English
Classroom which represented in SMP National Plus Pelita Insani Bogor. The
descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data itself. The
researcher concluded that the teachers used all type of speech function in
their classroom although in different amount and percentage. The researcher
found 54 speech function which classified into six types. They were
expressive, directive, referential, metalnguistic, poetic, and phatic. There were 3
expressive function which percentage was 5.56%. The expressive function
pronounced when teacher appreciates the students such as saying good,
right, etc. Different from the expressive function, the number of directive
function used by the teacher was 16 utterances with percentage was 29.63%.
This function pronounced to make interaction between teacher and students in
the classroom. The next function is referential function. There were 24 utterances
with the percentage is 44.44%. Not only made interaction with the students,
the teacher also gave many information including materials of lesson. The other
function was metalinguistic which explains or comments about language. The
amount of this function were 3 utterances with percentage is 5.56%. The
teacher explains some terms of linguistic such as explains words into another
language. The fifth function was poetic function. There were only one of
teachers’ talk which belongs to this function. The percentage was 1.85%.
The last type of speech function was phatic which pronounced to keep
communication between speaker and listener such as greeting and leave taking.
The total amount of this function was 7 utterances with percentage 12.96%. Based
on the data findings which stated in the previous chapter, it can be
concluded that referential function was the most frequently used. The teacher
produces 24 (44.44%) referential function in her talk.
