Text Types Used in the Textbooks: A Systemic Linguistic - Based Study

This study relates to text types used in the textbooks. The objectives of the study are 1) to analyze text types used in the textbooks, 2) to evaluate how the text types are realized in the textbooks, and 3) to reason for the various text types are realized. This study used qualitative descriptive method. The research data are text types used in the textbooks. The data sources of this research are textbooks of the first grade of State Islamic School. The technique for collecting data was observation. The results of the study found that the textbooks use four text types, namely descriptive text, recount text, narrative text and report text. Descriptive text is the most dominant type found ( 57.90%), while narrative text is the least dominant type found ( 5.26%) and social function, generic structure and linguistic feature are the realization of the text types. There is a reason for the use of the text types, namely linguistic reason. It can be seen from the field, tenor and mode of the text types. Thus four text types used in the textbooks are found, namely; descriptive text, recount text, narrative text and report text. The realization of the text types in the textbooks are from the social function, generic structure and linguistic feature. The reason for the use of text types were realized from the linguistic reason. The linguistic reason is shown that the use of text types depends on the context. The context of the situation includes three features, namely; field, tenor and mode.
