Developing Glove and Finger Puppets as Media for Teaching Speaking at the First Year Students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan

The objectives of this study was to develop glove and finger puppets for the first year students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan. The nature of this study was Research and Development (R&D) study. The steps of the study were conducting needs analysis, selecting the topics and objectives of the materials, designing the puppets (first draft), getting expert judgment, developing the final product of the media. This study involved 24 students in the first year as the research subjects. The data were obtained by administering questionnaires and observations. The results of the needs analysis questionnaires were analyzed using percentage and the expert judgment questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistic and frequencies. There were two experts involved to review and evaluate the developed media. Data got from the result of need analysis was being the basis in developing the product. There were five kinds of puppet that had been developed. They are caterpillar puppet, bee puppet, ladybug puppet, dragonfly puppet, and butterfly puppet. Then, based on the expert judgment, the puppets were appropriate for the first year students of junior high school. It was proved by the mean value of 3.6 which cover the appropriateness of goal, contribution, the attraction, and the ease of using the media.
