Abstract

This study deals about students’ questions in English classroom interaction. This study aimed at finding out the types of students questions in English classroom interaction. The method of the study was descriptive method with qualitative approach. The source of data was taken from the 2018/2019 students’ of grade ten IPA of SMA Swasta Santa Maria Medan. The data were collected in by observing, recording and interviewing. The data were analyzed based on Long and Sato theory (1983). The result of this study showed that there were two types of questions used by the students namely display question and referentional question. The referential question mostly used by the students to get more explanations and clarifications. The factors affecting students’questioning were personal factor, social factors and material. As the conclusion, the questions have the very important support in the classroom interaction to create collaboration between teacher and students. Therefore, teachers need to create good athmospere in classroom interaction to minimize the hindering factors of students’ questioning.
