DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS BASED ON GENRE APPROACH FOR THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF CULINARY AT SMK NEGERI 3 TANJUNGBALAI

This study aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) based on genre approach. The subject of this research was Grade X students of Culinary in SMK N 3 Tanjungbalai, Sumatera Utara consisting of 20 students. The data of this study were English reading materials for Grade X of SMK N 3 Tanjungbalai. Qualitative data consist of syllabus and existing teaching materials. Instrument for collecting data were questionnaire, interview, and existing material. After analyzing the data, the students’ needs were elaborated in learning English in term of vocation that they have through questionnaires. After the students’ need had been analyzed, the new reading materials were developed. The developing of teaching materials was related to the vocation that the students had; it was culinary. The new English reading materials have been validated by experts. The average scores were 90 from the English lecturer and 94 from subject teacher. It means the new English reading materials as categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade X of culinary in SMK N 3 Tanjungbalai. The new English reading materials were designed to find the sudents’ need especially in learning reading. Then, the new English reading materials will be implemented in the school as recommended materials.
