Abstract

The purposes of this study are: 1) to examine how the existing English reading
materials used today by the students in language learning, 2) to find out the
reading directions needed by the students to enable them learn English effectively,
3) to develop the concept oriented reading directions with reference to
metacognitive strategy for students of grade XI SMU IMMANUEL Medan. This
study was using educational research and development design. The instruments of
collecting the data were observation, documentation and questionnaire. The
source of the data was the students of XI Grade in SMU IMMANUEL Medan in
2017/2018 academic year, and the existing English reading material used today.
This study found English learning process in SMU IMMANUEL is still using
traditional method. The teacher is teaching for the test, the students see English as
a set of complicated rules to memorize instead of way to communicate with
others. Reading material in the current text book is read by translated word by
word, and never discussed related to its conceptual meaning by using
metacognitive strategy. The existing reading material fails to provide clear
directions on how to do reading for learning which is important to build literacy
skill. It is also found that number of books in School Library is not directly
correlated with the improvement of literacy rate. The researcher used
metacognitive strategies in designing the new material and for the stages within
chapter, the IDEAL structure was applied. IDEAL stands for introduction, define
the problem, exploration of reading strategies, action and look back.
