Abstract

This research deals with Indonesian-English code-switching in quoted statements in politic and law texts of the daily KOMPAS. Four problems are addressed in this study, namely the inquiry on realizations of code switching in quoted statements in politic and law texts of the daily KOMPAS, investigation on the types and the dominant type of code-switching, and explanation on the occurrence of the dominant type. Fifty-six code-switching were collected in this study. The data were obtained from sixteen editions of the daily KOMPAS taken randomly out of four month publications (from January 1, 2010 editions to April 30, 2010). The data were analyzed by applying code-switching theories developed by Gumperz and Poplack. The occurrences of code-switching were qualitatively analized by converting them into percentages to determine the proportions.Through the fifty-six code-switching, the writer found that code-switching in quoted statements in politic and law texts of the daily KOMPAS are realized in four variFtions, namely by using (1) Indonesian affixations to common English words, (2) common English words and phrases, (3) repeated English interjection and (4) sentence in English. Besides, there are four types of code switching found in quoted statements in politic and law texts of the daily KOMPAS, they are (1) metaphorical code-switching, (2) conversational code-switching, (3) intersential code-switching and (4) intrasentential code-switching. Of the four types of code-switching, conversational code-switching dominantly occurs in quoted statements of politic and law texts of the daily KOMPAS with the proportions of almost two thirds (46.65%) of the total occurring of code-switching. There are some reasons for the dominant occurrence of code-switching in quoted statements of politic and law texts of thedaily KOMPAS. Firstly, the journalists reported reality to the readers, especially in the situation where the journalists quoted the authorities statements directly by usingdirect speech. Secondly, the social context of code-switching represented social reality through linguistic experience. Thirdly, both the news source and the journalists shared the same knowledge due to contextual aspect of code-switching.
