Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to improve the students achievement on Grade XI in writing report text by applying Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD) method. It was conducted by applying action research. The subject of the study was 40 students of grade XI of SMA Negeri 8 Medan and it was conducted in two cycles, namely the instrument for collecting quantitative data used writing test and the instrument for collecting qualitative data used interview, questionnaire sheet and diary notes. Based on the data analysis, it can be seen that there is a difference of the students achievement in cycle I and cycle II. In writing report text test, the students score kept improving and the mean of the students score in cycle I was 74,32 and cycle II was 85,8. After applying Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD) method, it was found that the students achievement in writing report text is significantly improved. This improvement is caused by the students interest in the way of applying Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD) method in teaching learning process. The research result showed that the application of Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD) method in teaching English especially in writing report text is effective to improve the students achievement in writing report text.
