Coherence in Recount Text of “English for Nusantara” English Textbook Used at SMP Negeri 27 Medan

This research aims to investigate: 1) the types of coherence found in factual recount
texts in the English for Nusantara textbook, and 2) the realization of coherence in the
factual recount texts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data
consisted of three factual recount texts selected from the English for Nusantara
textbook. The study used Eggins‟ (2004) theory of coherence and Gruber and
Redeker‟s (2014) framework of coherence realization. The data were collected
through documentation and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles,
Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The findings showed that: 1) two types of coherence
were found, namely registerial coherence and generic coherence. Registerial
coherence was achieved through field, tenor, and mode, while generic coherence was
manifested through orientation, events, and reorientation. Registerial coherence
appeared more frequently than generic coherence. 2) the realization of coherence was
analyzed at the micro, meso, and macro levels. At the micro level, the analysis began
by identifying clauses and conjunctions, followed by identifying the nucleus and
satellite, analyzing the semantic relations between clauses, and interpreting sentencelevel
coherence. At the meso level, the analysis involved identifying paragraphs,
rhetorical modes, discourse markers, and sequencing patterns before interpreting
paragraph-level coherence. At the macro level, the analysis started with identifying
the generic structure and registerial features (field, tenor, and mode), followed by
analyzing the relationship between generic coherence and registerial coherence, and
finally interpreting the overall coherence of the texts.
