EFL Students’ Awareness of English–Indonesian Translation Accuracy: A Case Study on the Fifth-Semester Students of the English Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan

The purpose of this study was to describe students' awareness of the accuracy of
English-Indonesian translations and to elucidate the causes behind their awareness.
A qualitative descriptive strategy was employed in this study. Ten fifth-semester
students from Universitas Negeri Medan's English Study Program served as the
study's subjects. A questionnaire and a translation assignment were used in
collecting the data. Students' knowledge of translation correctness was assessed
using the translation task, and the factors influencing their awareness were found
through the questionnaire. The data were examined by characterizing the students'
answers and matching their assessments with those of experts. The findings
demonstrated that students' awareness of translation validity varied upon the text.
Sentences with basic structures and obvious meanings elicited greater awareness
from the students, whereas sentences with complicated structures and abstract
meanings elicited less awareness. Additionally, the study discovered that
vocabulary mastery, translation techniques, machine translation utilization,
language proficiency, and learning experience all had an impact on students'
awareness.
