SPEECH FUNCTION OF PARHATA UTTERANCES IN MARHATA ADAT IN BATAK TOBA WEDDING CEREMONY

This study focused on the speech function used by parhata in marhata adat in Batak Toba wedding ceremony. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were all utterances uttered by parhata in marhata adat event in Batak Toba wedding ceremony. The result of the study showed that there were three types of speech: statement of bride (62, 88%) and groom (46,99%), command of bride (30,36%) and groom (30,12%) and question of bride (6,82%) and groom (22,89%). All the types of speech function realized in moods, namely declarative of bride (74,24%) and groom (51,99%), imperative of bride (18,94%) and groom (25,30%) and interrogative of bride (6,82%) and groom (22,89%). Statement was became the most dominant commonly used in marhata adat event of Batak Toba, because parhata (speaker) from bride and groom sides used statement to deliver their speech to give information, blessings, hopes, reasons, thanks and acknowledge also demanding goods and services.
