Abstract

This study deals with semantic analysis of English loanwords
in Indonesian irrigation texts. The objective is to describe the
semantic changes of English loanword occur in Indonesian irrigation
texts. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. The sources
of data were taken from some documents in Irrigation works.
There are three types of semantic change of loanwords namely
broadening meaning, narrowing meaning and meaning shifts. And
after analyzing the data, the findings are from the l 06 loanwords of
data, there are 40 loanwords for narrowing meaning type, 7 loanwords
for broadening meaning, and 59 loanwords for no semantic change. It
means that most of the loanwords which are used in Indonesia
irrigation texts get no semantic change. It proves that the meaning of
the word from original language does not change in the target
language. This meaning of word does not change eventhough it is
loaned from foreign language.
