Abstract

The aims of this research was to develop a learning material on ecology and environment topics based on scientific literacy and local potential of North Sumatera which is feasible empirically. Feasibility of learning material was obtained through validation by scientific literacy-content experts to assess the feasibility of the content based on Science as a body of knowledge, science as a was of investigation, science as a was of thinking, interaction of science tech-nology and society, design expert to assess the feasibility of the design learning material, assessment biology teacher and students' response to learning material developed. According to National Curriculum in 2013, each school was given freedom to consider their local potential and can be done by incorporating elements of local potency in learning activities through the creation of learning material. Examples of North Sumatera local potencies have been integrated into this learning material involved wide rice field area, palm plantation, vegetable garden with various organism (integrated into ecosystem), Sinabung eruption, polution in Medan city and Lake Toba (integrated into Sustainability of environment and Polution). This research and development using Borg and Gall model. However this study was limited to preliminary field testing only. Data validation and the questionnaire responses of teachers and students were analyzed descriptively qualitative. The result showed that according to content experts, the feasibility of scientific literacy-content of product that has been developed is very good, in which the feasibility of the content based on Science as a body of knowledge has an average score 93.75% (very good), where as Science as a way of investigation 87.50% (very good), Science as a way of thinking 95.31% (very good), Interaction of science, technology and society 92.50% (very good). Feasibility of learning material’s design has been developed based on design expert is also very good with a percentage score of 91.43%. Result of biology teacher assessment on learning material on ecology and environment topics based on scientific literacy and local potency of North Sumatera was developed with 93.75% (very good). Students' response to the preliminary field testing individual testing is 80.35% (good), small group trial 84.52% (very good) and big group 91.38%.(very good).
