SPEECH ACTS IN UMPASA TOBA FUNERAL CEREMONY

This study deals with Speech Acts inUmpasa Toba Funeral Ceremony. The data of this study were the umpasa in Toba Funeral Ceremony. The umpasa which contained Speech Acts were identified and analyzed. This study applied descriptive qualitative method which is concerned in developing explanations of social phenomena to help us understand the social world in which we live and why things are the way they are. The descriptive qualitative was used in this research in which the writer analyzed the data and described the interpretation based on its Speech Acts classification to aim at revolving the phenomenon which had found in umpasa in the process of Toba funeral ceremony. The findings show of 37 umpasa, they were shown by Expressive (17), followed by Directives (10) and Representatives (7), whereas Commissives (2) and Declarative (1) and The interpretation of umpasa mostly showed Expressive acts as praying for the family’s happiness, safety, and prosperity because the funeral was a Saurmatua ceremony.
