Abstract

Investigation into biology development (embryonic and nymphal development) of brown planthopper Nilaparvata sp. on rice IR 64 under laboratory conditions (31-34oC) was carried out. Egg and nymphal stages were described. The egg size was changed during embryonic development. Under light microscope, nine stages of embryonic development can be distinguished. The duration of embryonic development was range from seven to elevm days. Nymphal development includes five instars which can be distinguished from the size of body. Nymphal development lasted about from 11 to 16 days. The average duration of the first, second, third, fourt and fifth instars were 2.6 days, 2.1 days, 2.7 days,2.8 days and 3.2 days, respectively. Therefore, the development of the planthopper from egg to imago lasted about from 18 to 27 days.
