Abstract
This study deals with politeness strategies used by the guest star in the TV talk show Mata
Najwa that broadcasted on Trans7. This study was conducted to find out the politeness
strategies used by the guest and the reasons they used those strategies. This research is a
descriptive qualitative research. To obtain the data, several talk shows were observed and
chosen, than transcribed. In doing the analysis, the steps used were identifying the politeness
strategy, classifying and explaining the politeness strategies based on theory of Brown and
Levinson (1987). The result shows that there are four strategies found namely bald on record,
positive politeness, negative politeness and off record. The most dominant strategy is positive
politeness strategy. Positive politeness strategy is actually a strategy oriented towards the
positive face of listener, the positive self image that he claims for himself. This strategy is
mostly affected on the place where the conversation took place. The conversation in the talk
show is delivered directly to the public, so it is important to make good and interesting
conversation. The other finding of the research is the most dominant strategy in positive
politeness, used in the talk show, is Joke. Actually, joke is a basic positive-politeness
technique used to minimize the FTA and to avoid a confrontation and a deep evaluation are
the reason as well to make people speak differently. Because this event was broadcasted on
Television station, joke has function to make the situation better and fun, and the guests could
manage the relationship and did not threaten the herarer’s face.
