Abstract

Sargassum spp. wide leaves and small leaves are seaweed t is found in the coastal of Sepanjang Gunungkidul Yogyakarta, but until now the use of Sargassum in Gunungkidul Regency has not been optimal, only used as fertilizer and dried for industrial materials. Therefore, research on the use of Sargassum for skin health is carried out in order to determine the effect of extracts on
microbes and the content of their active compounds. Extraction was used maceration method with Aquades and Methanol solvents. Separation of active compounds was used silica gel column chromatography with n-hexane and acetone solvents, identification of compounds used, TLC,
detection reagents and GC-MS. As a microbial inhibitory test used Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Screening results showed that the highest rendemen in wide leaves with distilled water (48%), while the lowest in wide leaves with methanol
solvent (2.04%). Crude extract with both solvents, can inhibit the growth of microbes. The results of methanol extract, fraction 2, wide leaves is the best fraction that can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis at a concentration of 6.25%, while the best fraction of small leaves is fraction 1 which can inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acne
bacteria at a concentration of 25%. GC-MS results showed that the wide leaf fraction had 12
active compounds, three compounds which had the potential as antimicrobials were Decane (CAS)
n-Decane, Dodecanoic acid, methyl ester (CAS) Methyl 1, and Fucosterol, while the small leaf
fraction had 14 active compounds. , two compounds that have the potential as antimicrobials are
Dodecanoic acid, methyl ester (CAS) Methyl 1 and Dodecanoic acid, methyl ester (CAS) Methyl 1.
