SHIFTS IN TRANSLATION OF THEME IN SALAH ASUHAN

This thesis, entitled Shifts in Translation of Theme in Salah Asuhan, deals with
the analysis of shift occurring in translation of theme in the novel.The main objectives
of the study were to answer the three research problems under study; those are (1) to
identify types of shift which occur in the translation of theme found in Indonesian-
English translated novel, Salah Asuhan, (2) to describe the realization of theme shifts
from SL into TL, and (3) to describe the way shifts are realized in the process of
translation theme from SL into TL. The data were collected form Salah Asuhan, as the
SL; and Never the Twain, as the TL, by applying documentation method of closereading
and note-taking technique. Then, the data was classified into some groups
according to their type and displayed in table. The data was descriptively analyzed
based on theories from Halliday and Catford, to find out the answer of the research
problems. The result of the data analysis shows that the only type of shift found in the
translation of theme in ‘Salah Asuhan’ was structure shift. In more detail, the
determination of shift of theme are based on types of theme, namely topical, textual and
interpersonal. In detail, there are 226 theme shifts found in the novel. In detail, the shifts
is dominated by topical theme shifts in 57% (130 data), followed by textual theme shifts
in 28% (63 data), and interpersonal theme shifts in 15% (33 data). The realization of
theme shifts was associated with oblique procedures which are called transposition,
modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. There are two main factors behind the
occurrence of theme shifts, namely linguistic and cultural factor
