Abstract

This research describes fishery lexical items in Tanjungbalai Malay language. This study aims to (1) investigate the words related to the fisheries in Malay Tanjungbalai, (2) to describe the level of mastery of Tajungbalai Malay society to fishery lexical items, (3) to explain the reasons of fishery level in Tanjungbalai Malay language. The method used in this research was survey research. The respondent were 10 Malay families who live in Tanjungbalai taken by purposive random sampling. The data were taken from interviews and questionnaires as instruments.The interview was used to investigate the lexical items in Tanjungbalai Malay language and to find out the reasons why the level of their mastery of lexical items in Tanjungbalai Malay language while the questionnaire was used to determine the level of Tanjungbalai Malay community's mastery of fishery lexical items. The result of the research shows that (1) there are 408 (four hundred eight) lexical items in Tanjungbalai Malay language which is divided into five categories consist of names of fish, product derived from fishery, the tools of fishery, activities related to fishery, and qualities related to the fishery (2) the level of mastery of fishery lexical items in Tanjungbalai Malay languages is still at the first level (know and use) although it is not closed the possibility to change in the future due to a very significant decrease in the young generation in the Tanjungbalai Malay community (3) The reason of the level of mastery of fishery lexical items in Tanjungbalai Malay language are Tanjungbalai Malay speakers still proud being Tanjungbalai Malay people as their identity, the less awareness of young generation to mastery fishery lexical items in Tanjungbalai Malay language, and the government interventation on marine activity.
