Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of rhetorical pattern realized in selected
opinion articles about corruption in Indonesia found in Daily Kompas. The data
were analyzed by using Kirszner-Mandell’s theory of rhetorical pattern, which
mentioned nine patterns to develop paragraphs, namely narration, description,
exemplification, process, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, classification
and division, definition, and argumentation. This research was conducted by using
the descriptive-qualitative approach. The data were taken from the opinion
column about corruption in Indonesia found in Daily Kompas. There were 92
body paragraphs of six selected opinion articles. The findings of the study showed
that seven rhetorical patterns were realized in six selected opinion articles. They
were Argumentation (38.04%), Cause-Effect (26.08%), Process (17.39%),
Comparison-Contrast (9.78%), Narration (6.52%), Exemplification (1.08%), and
Classification-Division (1.08%). Argumentation was mostly used due to the
readers’ need of facts, data, and the experts’ authority to prove the truth of issues.
