Abstract

This study is conducted to describe the Thematic Structures in Computer Help menu texts. Computers Help menu texts are analyzed to get the thematic structures elements, and to explore the dominant type of thematic structures. The study uses Descriptive Qualitative Research which focuses on the natural characteristics of data because the researcher describes and elaborates the findings why the thematic structures are used in the texts. The scope of thematic structures which are taken, Marked and Unmarked Theme, Theme in Declarative Clauses, Theme in Interrogative Clauses and Theme in Imperative Clauses, Multiple Theme, group complex or phrase complex in the Computer Help menu texts. Then the data analysis has found Thematic Structures in the texts namely: Unmarked Theme in Declarative Clauses 103 (22.39 %), Marked in Declarative Clauses 176 (38.26 %), Unmarked Theme in Imperative 50 (10.87 %), Marked Theme in Imperative 131 (28.48%), Topical 450 (60.89 %), Textual 222 (30.04 %), Interpersonal 67 (9.07 %), Nominal Group 61 (45.18 %), Nominal Group/Phrase Complex 26 (19.26 %), and Prepositional Phrase 48 (35.56 %). There are so many Help menu texts in each application program and the application program which is taken from Microsoft Word especially in About checking the consistency of formatting, About Portable Network Graphicsformat, About automatic formatting, About applying formatting, About the format of pasted information, About displaying tracked changes and comments, About formatting text by using styles, Speck how dates and numbers appear in Indic language documents,1 Customize labels, Continue a story elsewhere with linked text boxes, About opening and saving in other file formats, Formats Word can open directly, Install system support for multiple languages, About footnotes and endnotes, Field codes: Date field, Customize envelopes, Change the position of text in a table. The Findings are Marked Theme, Conjunctions, Relatives, Prepositional as adjunct, Nominal Group which are so dominant in the texts because the arrangement of clauses is not based on the good structure and there are so many compound and clause complexes in the texts. The first position of clauses are not subject or actor, but as conjunctions or relatives. In this research, there are not three elements of Interpersonal Theme of Thematic Structures, namely, Finite, WH-elements, and Vocative because the texts are not interactive communication, they are comments or instructions to the users of computer. It is useful for the users especially students who are studying computer in learning English to understand the operation of computer
