LOVE AND TRAGEDY AMONG THE MAJOR CHARACTERS OF BUYA HAMKA'S TENGGELAMNYA KAPAL VAN DER WIJCK NOVEL

The study on this paper concerns with the way the researcher finds the types of love,
the elements of tragedy and the relation between both of it in the major characters
of Tenggelamanya Kapal van der Wijck Novel. There were found 4 types of love
and 4 elements of tragedy and the relation between both of them are, love is the
reason for their death. The researcher found that between Zainuddin, Hayati and
Aziz there are Agape (altruistic love), Ludus (playful love), Pragma (pragmatic
love) and Storge (friendship love), as for tragedy, there are plot, character, thought
and diction. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative analysis where
the researcher firstly identified the types of love, the elements of tragedy and the
relation between it and then categorized it. Data collecting technique is by using
documentary technique. Data analysis technique is to prepare the
utterances/statements/actions which reflects the three questions, identifying,
categorizing, and describe the types of love, the elements of tragedy and the relation
between it. From the analysis, the writer concludes that the love and tragedy in the
novel have a big influences in the story.
