Abstract

It specially focused on types of requestive speech act which were used by male and female at Puskesmas, how requestive speech act were realized and why requestive speech act were realized the way they were. The theory used in this study are based on the level of directness scale of requests theory proposed by Blum Kulka (1989) namely direct requests, conventionally indirect requests and non-conventionally indirect requests. This research employed descriptive qualitative design. The data were the transcriptions of recorded observations and interviews using audio recorder at Puskesmas Stabat, Langkat, North Sumatera. The findings showed that Firstly, all types of directness scale of requests were used by male and female at Puskesmas namely direct requests, conventionally indirect requests and non-conventionally indirect requests. Secondly, it found that male informants used mood derivable, suggestory formulae, query preparatory and strong hints while female informants used mood derivable, obligation statement want statement, suggestory formulae, query preparatory and strong hints. Thirdly, there are three reasons why requestive speech act were realized the way they were. Different gender was influence the ways male and female performed their requestive speech act. Male and female dominantly used direct requests. It was used because it was to keep efficiency, conveyed their requestive speech act clearly, briefly without produce ambiguous sentences to avoid misinterpretation on the patients’ mind. However male and female dominantly used direct requests but both different in quantities and the frequencies of using direct requests. It is because when a male face a problem, he will respond to it by giving advice or solution to the problem. It is different with female; they are used to involve their feeling of sensitive and solidarity so that female talk more than male. Then, social distance was not influence on linguistic choices in requestive speech act used by male and female at Puskesmas.
