Description:

This study deals with code-mixing among students of bilingual Islamic school tadib al-muallimin al-Islami in Medan. It employs qualitative research design with a single case study where to gain an understanding on this study, it is conducted descriptively. This study aims to find (1) the dominant language used by the students, (2) the factors motivate the studenst using code-mixing, (3) the reasons why the students use Arabic rather than English as their linguistic repertoire. The subject were senior high school at grade six in Islamic school tadib al-muallimin al-fslami in Medan. The instrument used for this study were questionaire and interview. The first data collection involved a set questionaire which examined the dominant, the factors motivate the students using code-mixing during English class. In order to find out the factors and the reasons why they choose the Arabic language rather than English while having English class. The data were analysed by Miles and Hubermons data analysis. There are five factors motivate the students using code-mixing in English class, namely, situation, participant role and raftionships, message-intrinsic factor, language attitude, dominance, and security. Grammatical form and lexical need are the most influent reason why the students choose Arabic language rather than English.
