Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of the growing development of student character and competence mastery of teaching materials on Environmental Chemistry lecture. In addition, this reasearch also determined the relationship between the students growing of the character development toward mastery competency teaching materials. Samples were students in first semester, 2012/2013 academic year at the Department of Chemistry, Science Faculty, Medan State University. Learning model used is the Problem Base Instruction is based on a constructivist understanding accommodate student involvement in learning and problem solving. The growing development of student character observed included creativity and responsibility. The level of student mastery of competencies teaching materials measured by standardized test essays. The Growing student character development was observed by observation with standardized instruments. The results of research showed that the model of learning Problem Base Instruction can effectively develop character values creativity and responsibility of student by 92,5% and 90,0% respectively. In addition, Problem Base Instruction teaching model can effectively improve the mastery of competencies by 90,0% teaching materials. There is a significant relationship between the growing development of student creativity character toward mastery competency teaching materials with a significance value of 0,000. There is a significant relationship between the growing development of student responsibility character toward mastery competency teaching materials with a significance value of 0,024.
