Abstract

The low level of students' higher-order thinking skills resulted in Indonesia getting the lowest rank in PISA 2018. One of the reasons this happened was because of the lack of HOTS questions that were used to improve students' higher-order thinking skills. Based on the revised Bloom's taxonomy published in 2001, the HOTS questions are classified at the levels of analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6). This study aims to create HOTS questions on sequences and series material, to see the validity and practicality of the HOTS questions, and to see the potential effects given by the questions. This study uses Research and Development (R&D) method with the 3D model which consists of the define stage, the design stage, and the develop stage. This research was conducted at MAN 2 Model Medan in class XI IPA 2 with 32 students. Data collection techniques used in the form of interviews, observations, walkthroughs, questionnaires, and tests. The results show that at the expert stage, 10 HOTS questions for the material of sequences and series for class XI MAN 2 Medan Model obtained an average value of 0.8, which means that all of the questions are categorized as very valid. However, at the validity test stage there are 6 questions categorized as valid, 3 questions categorized as invalid, and 1 question not being categorized. The practicality of the HOTS questions is in the practical category. The potential effect given by the HOTS questions is 70.86 which is categorized as good.
