Abstract

This paper aims to explore and discuss selected applications of ICT tools in material design. The tools are aconcordancer and acloze generator, which can be used to create some learning activities for Indonesian learners of English as a foreign language. The tools are selected because they can be used at no cost as they are all freeware and can be downloaded from the internet. An appropriate selection of the activities may provide opportunities for the learners to develop their independence in learning the language as the tasks can be designed for both classroom and out-of-class activities. In other words, the tools can promote the shift to a learner-centered environment. Therefore, the applications of ICT in material design as a first step to learners autonomy barely needs restating.
