Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the levels of reading comprehension questions
in the English textbooks based on the 5 levels of Barret's Taxonomy question
levels. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The
source of this data is the reading comprehension questions in the two English
textbooks used for the second grade student of the state senior high school in
Medan.The data were collected by documentation analysis based on the theory of
Ari Donald. The data were analyzed based on Gass et al theory and the actions of
data analysis are the following :(1)Identifying the whole questions from the two
English texbooks.(2)Classifying the levels of reading comprehension questions
based on the five levels of Barret's taxonomy.(3)Present the occurrences of the
each level of reading questions.(4)Analysing the factors underlying the use of the
reading questions in the two English textbooks.(5) Describing the
findings.Afteranalyzing the data, the writer found that the 5 levelsof Barret's
Taxonomy were used in the two English textbooks with the percentage :
Inference, 31.74, Evaluation, 28.58 % , Appreciation, 26.99 % , Reorganization,
9.52%, Literal 3.17 % for the English textbook " Bahasa Inggris" published by
Kemendikbud while the percentage for English textbook " English Skils for the
Future " published by Grafindo are ; Inference 37.5 %, Reorganization 25.0 %,
Evaluation 12.5% ,Appreciation 14.78 %, Literal, 10,22 %. The factors
underlying the use of the reading questions levels in those two English textbooks
are : (1)The writers' perception on how reading comprehension should be trained
and (2).The writers' perception on the nature of reading comprehension of how a
text is understood.
