Abstract

The objectives of this study are to explain the extent of students’ reading comprehension achievement taught by using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) strategy is higher than taught by using Think Pair Share (TPS) strategy, to explain the effect of students’ reading comprehension achievement with high motivation is higher than that low motivation taught by using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) strategy and Think Pair Share (TPS) strategy, to elaborate the interaction between teaching strategies and motivation on the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The genre of the reading comprehension text focuses on narrative text especially in legend. The population of this research was the students in grade X of Madrasah Aliyah Swasta Al Washliyah 30 Binjai in 2020/2021 school year. The research design was experimental research by using factorial design 2 x 2. The XA class used as experimental class was taught by using STAD strategy and XB class used as experimental class was taught by using TPS strategy. The data were analyzed by applying Two- Way ANOVA, comparing Fobserved and Ftable at the level of significance α = 0.05, the result reveals that (1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension that taught by using STAD strategy with the mean score is 83.94 higher than those that taught by using TPS strategy with the mean score is 80.35 and the Fobserved= 45.04˃ Ftable = 3.99, it means that STAD strategy affects reading comprehension higher than TPS strategy (2) students’achievement in reading comprehension with high motivation with the mean score is 85.32 higher than those with low motivation with the mean score is 77.96 and the Fobserved = 15.36 ˃ Ftable = 3.99, it means students with high motivation affect reading comprehension higher than students with low motivation (3) there is interaction of reading strategies and students’ motivation, based on Fobserved = 7.77 ˃ Ftable = 3.99, it can be concluded that students with high motivation is better taught by using STAD strategy and students’ with low motivation is better taught by using TPS strategy.
