Abstract

This study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students’
analytical exposition texts of eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 1 Bangun Purba. The
aims of this study were (1) to identify the types of theme used, (2) to identify the
patterns of thematic progression used and (3) to describe the realization of
thematic progression pattern in the text. This study was conducted by using
desciptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students’
analytical exposition text. The instrument for collecting data was documentation.
The data were analyzed by using Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). Thus, the
result of this study were the following, (1) there were four types of Theme found
in students’ analytical exposition texts, they were Unmarked Simple Theme,
Marked Simple Theme and Unmarked Multiple Theme and Marked Multiple
Theme. (2) There were three patterns of thematic progression found in students’
analytical exposition texts, they were: Constant Theme Pattern, Linear Theme
Pattern and Split Rheme Pattern. (3) The realization of thematic progression was
found Constant Theme Pattern dominated in the texts followed by Linear Theme
and Split Rheme Theme.
