COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES IN CONVERSATION USED BY EXTROVERT AND INTROVERT STUDENTS AT POLITEKNIK LP3I MEDAN

This study dealt with Communication Strategies in Conversation Used by Extrovert and Introvert Students at Politeknik LP3I Medan. This research used qualitative research design with a single case study to gain an understanding on this study. It was conducted descriptively. This study aimed to(1) examine the types of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3I Medan, (2) described how the manners of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3I Medan and (3) explained how the reasons of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3I Medan. The subjects were 32 students (introvert and extrovert) of Politeknik LP3I Medan. The use of instruments in this study were observation,interview and documentation. The observationwas used to find out the phenomenon of the types of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3I Medanin order to describe the manners of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3I Medan. The interview was used to gain the reasons of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3I Medan. One was new phenomenon that found by researcher. There were four types communication strategies of extrovert and introvert students of Politeknik LP3I Medan.They were 7.25 percent of achievement strategy, 58,15 % of time-gaining strategy, 3.6 percent of self monitoring strategy, 7.25 percent of interacting strategy and 23.6 percent of re-role play as a new phenomenon in this study.There were two manners of communication strategies of extrovert and introvert students of Politeknik LP3I Medan. They were 55.5 percent of direct strategy and 44.4 percent of interactional strategy. There were three reasons of communication strategies of extrovert and introvert students of Politeknik LP3I Medan. They were 22.2 percent of providing opportunities for practice, 33.3 percent of providing list of needed vocabulary and 44.4 percent of remind forgotten words.
