Abstract
This study deals with symbolic elements and their meanings, the realization of symbol in movie and why the symbol has a meaning as they are in Toba Dreams movie. The objectives of this study were to find out the kinds of symbol in the movie, elaborate the realization of the symbols that appear in the movie, and describe why the symbols has a meaning as they are. This study was
conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the symbols that appeared in the movie. The data were analyzed based on the theory that proposed by Eco. The findings indicated that there were 15 symbols that appear in the movie. They are red, white, black, mountain, lake, north, west, buffalo, pig, goldenfish, tomb, bolon house, laying hands, throwing
soil and horas. There were many ways to apply a symbol in a movie. Some symbols were applied with the point of view in the movie, some types of symbol were also applied in an object and some were applied in a situation. The meaning of a symbol was manipulated with formal mathematical
and logical rules. Ideology and collective agreement also play an important role in shaping the meaning of a symbol.
