Lexical Density and Grammatical Intricacy of Reding Materials in the Textbook for the Eleventh Grade Students of Senior High School

This study deals with lexical density and grammatical intricacy of English reading materials in the textbook for the eleventh grade of senior high school students. The objectives of the study are to find out the lexical density and grammatical intricacy which used in the reading texts of Let’s Learn English textbook and which text has the highest both lexical density and grammatical intricacy. This study was conducted by descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data of this study were the English reading materials of Let’s Learn English textbook for the eleventh grade of senior high school students published by Bailmu. The result of the analysis showed that: (1) Lexical density used in Let’s Learn English textbook had medium, high and low levels of lexical density. The texts were dominantly had medium level of lexical density. Grammatical intricacy that found in the texts were dominantly high which showed that the texts had more clause complexes in comparison with simple clause complexes. (2) The highest lexical density of the English reading text is “Volcano” with the percentage of 64%. While, the highest grammatical intricacy of the English text is “An Earthquake” with 2.2. It is suggested that textbook writers concern with the lexical density and grammatical intricacy of the reading materials so that the textbook can be used and understood by the teacher and the students.
