Abstract

This study aimed to find cognitive strategies applied in writing analytical exposition text for the grade eleventh students of Senior High School. The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative research through two phases; writing stimuli and interviewing. It was conducted in SMA Negeri 11 Medan, especially grade XI. The data were gathered by administering writing stimuli and interview to 22 respondents to get the students’ cognitive strategies. The writing test and interview results proved that among all the cognitive strategies, the students only used one strategy. It was repeating strategy. The underlying reason for the strategy used was because of the lack of students’ language mastery at the
level of vocabulary, sentence, and grammatical rule.
