SEMIOTIC INTERPRETATION OF MANDAILING PABUAT BORU CEREMONY INTO VERBAL REPRESENTATION

The study deals with Semiotic Interpretation of Mandailing Pabuat Boru Ceremony into Verbal Representation. The objectives of the study were to find out kinds and meaning, to describe the interpretation and to explain the reason for the use of symbol used in Mandailing Pabuat Boru ceremony. The research method of this study used qualitative method. The data got from 2 videos, makkobar
pabuat boru videos and upa-upa videos, and also interviewed two informants who are known as Raja Adat. The result showed that semiotic of the artefacts on
Mandailing Pabuat Boru Ceremony. The data were analyzed by using Peirce’s theory. The research found that 17 kinds of artifactss, 5 artefacts are index there are household appliances, rice with side dish, tappa, ampang, and ingot-ingot. Then 12 artifactss are symbol, there are betel, hen, paroppa sadun, tampi, bulung ujung pisang, rice, fish, shrimp, chicken, egg, salt, abit ‘sarong’. The artifacts that were used on Mandailing Pabuat Boru ceremony have different meaning. These differences have given different interpretation.
