THE MAINTENANCE OF MANDAILING LANGUAGE IN KECAMATAN TORGAMBA

This thesis, entitled The Maintenance of Mandailing Language in Kecamatan Torgamba, deals
with the way and the reason of Mandailing Language Maintenance in desa Pangarungan. The
main objectives of the study were to answer the two research problems under study, those are
(1) to explain the ways how Mandailing people maintain mandailing language in Desa
Pangarungan Kecamatan Torgamba and (2) to find out the reasons in affecting Mandailing
language in Desa Pangarungan Kecamatan Torgamba. The method of this study was descriptive
qualitative research. The participants were sixteen Mandailing people who live in Desa
Pangarungan Kecamatan Torgamba. The data were taken from the interview and questionnaire.
Specifically, the ways in maintaining Mandailing language in 93% by seeing the result of
interview, language use in family is mostly dominated in this study, neighborhood in 62%,
religion in 37%, workplace in 62%, homeland visits in 50%, and following the culture in 87%,
see each other frequently in 50% and education in 12%. In detail, language use in family is
dominated and it has the big role in maintaining Mandailing language in this study. Meanwhile,
the reasons of language maintenance which is done by Mandailing people in Desa Pangarungan
Kecamatan Torgamba are: in cultural activity 25%, show ethnic identity in 100%, socio
adaptability by using Mandailing language in 62%, and proud for being Mandailing people in
100%. Specifically, show ethnic identity and proud for being Mandailing people are mostly
dominated in this research.
