Abstract

Torch Ginger (Etlingera elatior (Jack) R. M. Smith) is one type of native Indonesian spice plant from the Zingiberacea family which is widely used by Indonesian people, one of them is the Batak tribe, as a kitchen spice and also medicine. Research on the inventory of Torch Ginger’ variants in North Sumatra is still little done, even though these plants thrive in this area. Therefore, this study aims is to reveal the existence and diversity of Torch Ginger in Pancur Batu District, North Sumatra. Sampling was conducted in September 2018 using field exploration methods. Researchers collect 22 Torch Ginger’ flowers which obtained fromJamin Ginting Km 22 Street, Namoriam Village, Durian Jangak Village, Tuntungan Village, and Pertampilen Village. Based on observations of 12 qualitative and quantitative characteristics of Torch Ginger’ flower and fruit, there were 2 variations of Torch Ginger, namely Etlingera elatior var. bright pink and Etlingera elatior var. pale pink flowers (pink, white, fuscia, pink pale).
