Abstract

This thesis explores the insights concerning the relationship between the thematic structure and the thematic development of Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign and Presidential Inauguration of 2009 and social context. The objective of this study are: (1) to identify how Themes and Rhemes are structured in Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign and Presidential Inauguration of 2009, (2) to describe what various patterns of textual development are used in Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign and Presidential Inauguration of 2009, (3) to explain why the structures of Theme and Rheme are used in Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign and Presidential Inauguration of 2009. This study is based on descriptive qualitative designs which focus on the naturalistic of the data. The analysis is conducted by describing the data. The data selected for the study are Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign and Presidential Inauguration of 2009. The analysis is conducted by describing the data as they are. As there are two sources of data, each data are analyzed and described independently from one another. The data analysis reveals that firstly, Unmarked Multiple Theme (UMT) dominantly used in Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign, whereas Unmarked Simple Theme (UST) used in Barack Obamas Speech on Presidential Inauguration of 2009. Secondly, Constant Theme Pattern is used dominantly both in Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign and Presidential Inauguration of 2009. Thirdly, information Structure revealed that both of Barack Obamas Speech on General Election Campaign and Presidential Inauguration of 2009 were started by Given Information than New Information which shows that the grammar of the speeches construes structural and cohesive. Structural means that the two system of the sentence is work and manage the discourse flow and the information of the text is parallel to the clause. It means that the sentence have relations to the clause.
