Abstract

This thesis deals with a study on the speech acts in the offering of Dayok na Binatur in Simalungun. The objectives were to: (1) analyze the types of speech acts are used in the offering of Dayok na Binatur in Simalungun, (2) describe the realization of speech acts in the the offering of Dayok na Binatur in Simalungun, and (3) explain the reasons why the speech acts are used in the ways they are. The technique of data collection were firstly done by downloading three videos of Simalungun Dayok na Binatur ceremoy from Youtube. Next, watching the video recordings and transcribing the utterances of the elements in Simalungun Dayok na Binatur ceremony. The types of speech act found in Simalungun wedding ceremony are declarative, representative, commissive, directive and expressive. The total number of the utterences spoken by the elements of Dayok na Binatur on the wedding ceremony in the Simalungun culture is 34 utterances. The total of declaratives speech act is 11 utterances or 30.56%, commisives speech act is 9 utterances or 25% , directives speech act is 8 utterances or 22.22%, representatives speech act is 6 utterances or 16.67% and expressives speech act is 2 utterances or 5.55%. The most dominant speech acts used by the four elements is declarative. There were two way of performed the speech act in the offering of Dayok na Binatur in Simalungun which were direct and indirect. Direct speech acts is more frequently used than indirect speech acts. The reasons why the speech acts used in the offering of Dayok na Binatur in Simalungun were to make the speaker to express their feelings in giving speech (expressives), to blessing and agreeing (declaration), to tell or give information about something (representative), to agree what the speaker uttered (commissive) and to give the best suggestion (directive).
