Abstract

This study aimed at describing the use of translation and investigating the reasons of using translation in writing recount text grade tenth students at SMAS SANTA MARIA MEDAN. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken at the tenth grade students at SMAS SANTA MARIA MEDAN. The data were collected by using an interview and pre test from the students and teacher in the whole process of writing recount text. The findings of this study showed that translation used in teaching learning process especially in writing recount text. The use of translation found during the teaching learning process by applying the scientific approach by the teacher where from the five steps of scientific approach such as observing,experimenting,associating,communicating, questioning, the researcher found that in the process of using translation in writing recount text, the dominant steps used in scientific approach are communicating and associating. The reasons of using translation in writing recount text was facilitating communication,teacher- students relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the studyn of foreign language teaching especially in writing skill.
