Abstract

The Purpose of this study are; 1) to examine the existing speaking materials used today by the students of D-3 mechanical engineering study program; 2) to find out the speaking materials needed by the students of D-3 mechanical engineering study program; 3) to develop the speaking materials students of D-3 mechanical engineering study program based on problem based learning model. This study is descriptive qualitative research. This study inspired of ten stage of Educational Research and Development model by Gall, Gall and Borg, 2003, but in implementing the model is simplified and adapted to Dirgayasa (2011) become four steps: 1) Evaluation and need analysis, 2) designing new material, 3) validating material, 4) revision and final production. The Instrument of collecting the data was collected by questionnaire, documentation and interview. The source of the data was the students of D-3 mechanical engineering study program academic year 2017/2018, Engineeringlecture, stake-holder, alumnus and also syllabus and the existing speaking material used today. The result of this study showed that 91.25% students agree that they really need the relevant material which proper to their program and the analysis of the existing speaking material and the existing syllabus showed that the both are less relevant for English speaking skill forD-3 mechanical engineering students. From the evaluation research got that learning method that used in the learning process found that it was less relevant. From evaluation research of documentation and interview agreed that the developing of speaking material for D-3 mechanical engineering study program is needed combined with the problem based learning model. the final result of this developing material through problem based learning become some activities; Observe, orient students on problem.b) Ask,bring up problem.c) Reasoning,collect data, d) Associating,Formulate answer.e) Communicate. and with new title which has correlation with D-3 mechanical engineering study program they are: Wheel Bearings, Can not starter, Overheating Engine, How Cars Work, Car Maintenance, Hydro Power Plant and Bioler.
