DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS FOR GRADE XII STUDENTS OF BEAUTY STUDY PROGRAM BASED ON PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING

This study aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) based on Problem-Based Learning. The subject of this research was Grade XII students of Beauty Study Program in SMK N 10 Medan, Sumatera Utara consisting of 25 students. The data of this study was English reading materials for Grade XII of SMK N 10 Medan. Qualitative data consist of syllabus and existing teaching materials. Instrument for collecting data were questionnaire and existing material. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have through questionnaires. After the students’ need had been analyzed, the new reading materials was developed. The developed teaching materials were related to the vocation that the students had; it was beauty study program. The new English reading materials have been validated by experts. The average scores were 95 from the English lecturer and 91 from subject teacher. It mean the new English reading materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade XII of beauty study program in SMK 10 Medan. The new English reading materials were design to meet the students’ need especially in learning reading. Then, the new English reading materials were implemented in the school as recommended materials.
