Abstract

This study concerns on how English reading materials of procedure text should be developed based on task based language teaching for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through five phases; conducting need analysis, writing syllabus, developing reading text materials, evaluating and revising reading text materials and writing the final draft. The subject of this research was the Grade XII students of culinary art in the state vocational high school 10 Medan consisting of 33 students. Two types questionnaire were used to collect the data. The first questionnaire was made to obtain the data for the need analysis while the second questionnaire was used to obtain the data about the appropriateness of the materials through the experts’ judgment. The data for both questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics. The questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials of procedure text which contain English for culinary art study program. Thus, developing materials were procedure texts which were followed by tasks. The developed materials were really met the students need and related to their vocation that the students had; it was culinary art. The products had been validated by experts. The average scores are 3, 81 from English lecturer and 3, 92 English teacher. It means the developing materials categorized as very good to be used in learning activities.
