Abstract

The main objective of this research is to describe the types of ambiguous meanings found in headlines of the daily newspaper The Jakarta Post and to explain the reason why ambiguity must be interpreted based on context situation.The method of the study is descriptive research. The sources of data are taken from headline on January 2010. They are taken from four weeks editions ; each week with different days. The data are 33 ambiguous meanings which consists of structural, lexical, and referential ambiguities. The technique of data analysis are to identifying, classifying, counting, showing of ambiguous meanings found in the headline of the daily the Jakarta Post, and elaborating some reasons why the meaning of ambiguity must be interpreted based on context situation. It means that the findings of the study indicate that there are three types of ambiguous meanings are found in headlines of the daily The Jakarta Post. They are structural, lexical, and referential In this study, lexical is the more dominant type of ambiguous meanings used is found in headlines of the daily The Jakarta Post. It can be concluded that ambiguous meanings must be interpreted based on context situation because it leads the reader to know the real meaning of the sentences and get more understand the ambiguous meaning in-depth.
