Abstract

The thesis deals with written genres written by Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah UmUtn:SMU) students. The study attempts to investigate types of genres and the doniiinant ones written by the students. It also analyzes schematic structures of each genre and: elaborates linguistic realizations that occur in each genre. Thirty students of SMIJ 3 Medan were taken as the sample of the research. They were asked to write compositions in two different settings — controlled and free settings. Based on the obtained information, the data were analyzed. Systemic functional linguistics was applied as the theoretical fraMework and the analysis was conducted by applying the pattern of schematic structures (Beginning^Middle^End) of each text produced. The findings indicate that there were six types of genres produced by the students, namely: Exposition, DeScription, Recount, Report, Discussion, and Narrative. The schematic structures of the six types of genres written by the students as follows: Exposition (Thesis^Argumentations^Conclusion);Description (Identification^Descriptions^(Closing Exriression/Conclusion);Recount(Orientation^Events^Reorientation);Report(Orientation AD4scriptions^(Conclusion));Discussion(Issue^ArgumentsforArgumentsagainstAGanclu siortt; and Narrative(Orientation^Evaluation^Complicati on AReso luti onA(Reori entatio n)). Thd findings also describe that Exposition and Report are the dominant type of genres in controlled data setting, while in free data setting the dominant ones are Description andl Recount. These show that the linguistic realizations found in the six types of genres written by the students have fulfilled the standard in certain genres as stated by Gerot (1994).
